Is Hiatal Hernia surgery painful?..What goes on?

I am a 21 year old female and I just found out that I have a hiatal hernia. What are the odds that they will do surgery?…It has caused me to have really bad acid reflux, shortness of breath and mild chest pains. I wants to get it repaired but i’ve never had surgery and was scared. I read that they keep you in the hospital for up to 6 days after the surgery so it must be pretty serious!

Any time a surgeon has to go through the abdominal wall, the recovery time and pain are worse than the incision length might imply. You will have some discomfort and pain when moving around for a week or so, but it can be managed with pain medication. The term in the hospital is "up to" six days so they can ensure you are free from post operative infection and other potential (but rare) complications.
As a surgery goes, this is very simple surgery and with very little risk. The reward is freedom from the pain and discomfort the hernia will cause, which not only will never go away without surgery, but very well may get worse over time.

i too have a hiatal hernia; haven’t had surgery; try lifting the head of your bed, eating smaller meals, taking a med for acid reflux, and making sure that nothing is tight around your waist; doesn’t cure all, but might be better than surgery!

I was doing laundry four days after the surgery, driving and going to the supermarket a week after it.
That was seven years ago, and the first thing I remember when the anesthesia wore off is not having that horrible heartburn. That vanished every possible pain from the operation, which wasn’t at all that bad anyway, because it is done with tiny incisions. Tiny.
I have remained reflux free all this time. I am able to eat whatever I want without fear. You know that fear, don’t you?
The only unwanted side effect is that after they sewed my esophagus nothing comes back up from my stomach, so I am unable to vomit. Is that really bad?
That is my experience. But only your doctor can tell you what needs to be done.

I have had an hiatal hernia for several years. I had to have the head of my bed raised up about 3 inches higher than the end. Eating smaller meals has helped. Ask a doctor if acid reflux medication will help. Also worked with a lady that had surgery and she told me that she had a steak dinner right after her surgery and it didn’t bother her. I don’t know about the hospital stay, but everybody is different so you could get out sooner
