Teen suffering from acid reflux!?!? HELP!?
Hi there!
I am a female teen suffering from what the GI believes is acid reflux. Prevacid helps a little but not too much. What other treatment could be available? I am waiting to get test results back and am also having a few more tests done tomorrow. This morning I woke up with a dry cough and and scratchy throat as if I have been screaming for a while but I havent been screaming. What does this mean? Also, there is a stomach bug going around, what are the chances of me getting it? Please answer the following questions:
~What are other treatment options if Prevacid isn’t working?(I am a female teen)
~What is this throat and dry cough sitaution for…like a cold or could it be part of acid reflux?
~Does this sound like acid reflux?
~If blood work and barium x rays come back negative, what other tests are there?
~How much longer do I have with this(i have had this for a month and a half)?
~When does surgery as treatment come in?
Thank for all the help!!!!!!
PS- Any other teens sufforing with acid reflux? Any suggestions or stories?
And also, I ate salsa with chips last night with soda for dinner and I was reallly sick. The symptoms are worse?!
I have suffered from GERD in the past so I know a little about it.
1. Other treatment options would include other prescription medications, there are more than just Prevacid, and sometimes it is trial and error to find what works for you. I did well on prescription Pepcid.
Watching what you eat is extremely important. That means cutting out foods that trigger stomach upset (LIKE SALSA and CHIPS and SODA!!). Your doctor should have given you a list of foods that are bad for GERD, it is important to follow that until you get your symptoms under control.
2. The throat/cough thing..not sure. I know if you have acid come up your throat at night it can give you a burning sensation in your throat the next day. VItal to NOT eat anything after dinner, keep your stomach empty before bed to limit how much acid is in your stomach.
3. I would not go for any more tests if everything so far is negative for other problems, then you probably have basic GERD.
4. I don’t think you have any surgery unless you have bleeding ulcers or something very serious, I can’t imagine you have anything THAT serious!
I know for myself, what I did when I was suffering from pain in my throat and GERD symptoms, I STOPPED: Cola, Tea, anything spicy, no sauce, no chocolates….I went on as BLAND a diet as I could…but for about 3 months. I swear, everything healed in that 3 months, and I hardly suffered any symptoms. Then, I slowly introduced some things, like I love ice tea, and even chocolate…but IN MODERATION. I was careful to note when it triggered GERD again.
ALSO, one more thing…if you are overweight, even by 10 or 20 pounds…losing that weight can really really help. When I lost some weight, the pressure around my stomach seemed to go and I did not suffer GERD symptoms for many YEARS. So, if you need to lose some weight, do it!
We EAT to live. We do not LIVE to EAT!!! Try to rethink food, food is for nutrition, energy and good health. You need to realize that with GERD – you will have to make intelligent choices for eating. There are a ton of web sites with diet information and other treatments that can help you, read as much as you can.
PS…I normally do not drink much water as I don’t like it, but when I increased drinking water with my meals, my digestion was way so much better. Just a suggestion.
