is it safe to take prilosec for acid reflux every day?

i have heartburn and acid reflux daily…it started out at night but happens in the day now. I tried prilosec otc for the 2 weeks that it said..it says you can take once every 4 months..2 days after the 14 day treatment it has returned… during the 14 days i had no problems…

Yes. Last time I went to the doctor, she told me that it is safe to take everyday over long periods of time. In fact, that is the treatment she prescribed for my acid reflux. She said that the only reason it says on the box to consult a doctor if you need to take it longer than 14 days is to make sure people taking it have the correct diagnosis (and are not self-diagnosing).

Try Nexium 20 or 40mg. It will resolve your problem for good.

Yes. I took it for six years. The doctor said that was okay. Then, all of a sudden, I just didn’t need it any more.

I have the exact same problem, my doctor said if it helps it is totally fine and not harmful to take it everyday for up to 3 years. By the way Prilosec is amazing!!!

I would consult a physician (a doctor) because it really depends on your circumstance that only a doctor could determine. Until then try some Rolaids Chew. They always help me.

I was in the same spot as you are. I took it as the box said and it worked great for the 14 days but on the 15th day it returned. So I took one pill everyday for close to a year! Now I can go DAYS with no heartburn and rarely have to take a pill for it. Good luck, I know how it is to have heartburn daily it sucks! You should be fine….but Im no DR.

If I remember correctly, that’s how Prilosec is supposed to be taken. However, if you really want some medical advice, you should see a stomach specialist.

I have something like acid reflux too. It wasn’t diagnosed until recently. Now I’m on a prescription strength acid reducer. Prilosec didn’t help. :(

I’ve been on either prevacid or prilosec just about everyday for years. I’ve been on prednisone for almost 10 years and the prilosec prevents acid reflux. I have yet to experience any adverse effects from it that I’m aware of.

I’d try to limit it if you can but it’s miserable living with heartburn….I know.

You might need something stronger. It’s better and safer to get a prescription from your doctor for stronger medication than to take more than the recommended amount of over-the-counter stuff.

The box says to take it every day for 2 weeks for a reason. If your symptoms last longer than that maybe you should see a doctor. Reflux can cause changes in the esophagus. These can include a condition called Barretts esophagus which is a precancerous condition that needs to be monitored. The reflux can also be caused by the H Pylori bacteria. But, if you are checked out by a doctor and it is indeed just reflux, then you can take the Prilosec every day for as long as it takes. But buy the generic Omeprazole. It is cheaper and the same drug. My doctor actually has me on 2 a day at this point. I have been taking it for 3+ years. But see a doctor to be sure it is nothing more serious.
