6 week old twins with SEVERE acid reflux..PLEASE HELP!!!!?

I have 6 week old twins who had surgery for pyloric stenosis at 2 weeks old. After surgery they were both diagnosed with severe acid reflux/GERD…The doctors changed their formula 4 times and are currently on good start gentle plus.

My concern is they STILL vomit at least half if not all of their feedings. My doctor reasured me that it is fine if they are not in any discomfort and are gaining weight. They are both on zantac and the doctor said I could put some rice cereal in their bottles to thicken their feedings but the rice cereal made them vomit even more so I stopped. Then I tried oatmeal in their bottles because the doctor said that is easier on the stomach, but they are still vomiting just as much…i was putting 2 tablespoons for a 4 ounce bottle. maybe too much or too little?

I litterally have tried EVERYTHING.. I feed them very slowly and burp them every half ounce or so..I sit them up while i feed them, i keep them sitting up for 30 minutes after their feeds, I prop them up in their bouncers so they are sittin up, I put a wedge under their mattresses.

Please, if anyone has any suggestions or advice as to how to slow the vomiting down a bit, or anything to help with the reflux it would be great. I just feel so bad for my babies, I can’t bear to think that they will be vomiting like this until they grow out of it.

Maybe try alittle rice cereal or oatmeal with a spoon? And if that helps then maybe that means its not thick enough in the bottle. I used Dr. Browns bottles for my twins to keep the gas low, I know not for reflux but still helped with the spitting up. Poor babies I hope you find something that helps.

Also, vomit has a lot of mucus and saliva mixed in, so it’s not all milk. I would say to make sure they are still gaining weight and then just keep doing what you’re doing. My 9 week old, who doesn’t have reflux, vomits and spits up all the time. I’m sure they’re doing great.

Does it look like it hurts them when they vomit? Most of the time it doesn’t bother babies. Are they hungry again right after they eat? If not, it’s a sign that they are getting enough food to keep them full for a while.

Yes my son has Acid Reflux as well and it makes you feel sooo horrible for them :( But anyways you are probably giving there medicines as directed but in case you didn’t know with that zantac you have to give them every dose a day that there supposed to get, you can’t miss a dose. sometimes I would only give mine twice a day instead of 3 because my baby was napping and I didn’t wanna wake him up because you know how there sleep is precious at that age! But anyways do NOT miss a dose of zantac or it will not help.. I was told also like if your baby is eating 4 ounces, give the baby like 2 oz. of it and then 2 oz’s an hour later, That way its still getting its feeding but also having time to digest so try that, It helped my baby ALOT!!! Also remember when the babies are sleeping make sure they are sleeping on there side so they do not choke on the acid reflux. Also I doubt you are giving your baby juice" but just in case I would suggest to not do that because Juice does" Make acid reflux worse!! I hope these tips work for you.. Just keep in mind theres better days to come, My sons Pediatrician said at least 95% of babies grow out of acid reflux, so Keep that is mind.. I hope your babies get better soon!!!!!!!!

Have you had them tested for milk allergy or switching to something like Alimentum. There is also Gripe Water wich helps with alot of indigestion problems.
My daughter had a lot of spitting up, constipation and crying. The gripe water definitely helped but didnt fix it.
Her regular pediatrician never considered a milk allergy. It was a second physician that was hired to help with the growing clinc that caught it. As soon as I put her on soy she was so much better. However, sometimes kids with milk allergies will also be allergic to soy so it might be necessary to switch to Alimentum.
    Best of Luck.

WOW, you have been through a lot. I’m sorry this is going on, it’s now allowing you to truly enjoy your babies. My best advice is to STOP seeing that pediatrician. It’s time to see a pediatric gastroenterologist. This could be damaging their digestive tract. My son spit up so much: 5+ bibs a day, 2 changes of clothing, a change of clothes for me, and burb rags like they were paper towels. The peds said he was fine. Finally they diagnosed him with reflux and I went straight to the specialist and never talked to the peds again about his reflux. It may be that they need a change of medication, a higher dose, or a combination of medication (my son took 2 meds). It may be that they need special formula-Enfamil AR, Similac Sensitive RS, or the special brands like Alimentum or Nuetramagin.

Please just call your insurance company and get a referral to a pediatric gastroenterologist. Good luck.

my 6 weeks old baby is the same!!!! I’m going crazy!

I stopped the rice cereal since yesterday because he’s so constipated (too much iron i think). But really, can you give them oatmeal instead or rice in the formula at this age? i will ask the pediatrician.
I’ve tried most formulas, so have you!
Yesterday i switched to lactose free (again!!!). I have 7 open packs of formula!!!
I’ve tried gripe water with and without alcohol. I’ve tried Colic Calm, an 18$ herbal medicine which claims to help reflux… but nothing!
He is on Zantac, and god knows if it’s is doing anything to help.
I’m seriously thinking of buying the Tucker wedge with sling (VERY expensive). Have you tried it?

Bottom line, nothing extra will really work. There is NO MAGIC CURE. If the pediatrician refers you to a specialist, they will only put your babies on stronger med combinations which carry more risks.

We have to work hard trying to make them feel as comfortable as possible considering the situation, and hope they outgrow it rather sooner than later. Meanwhile i try to keep my sanity so i don’t distress people around me along the way.

God help you, not only you’ve got the twin extra work to deal with, but this! Best of luck.
